Qualifications

Maintain awareness of role as representative of UCS; consider impact of activities and statements on organization reputation and credentials in press, public and private sectors; direct energies whenever possible to promote UCS, advance organization objectives, and enhance funding opportunities.
Perform other related duties as assigned.

BASIC KNOWLEDGE: Work requires knowledge of media and/or public relations. Also required are related technical skills, including ability to write clearly; ability to utilize computer information services; word processing and database proficiency.
EXPERIENCE: Position requires 1-2 years previous journalism or media relations experience. Strong writing and copy editing skills necessary. Must have good attention to detail, exceptional follow through, and thrive in a fast paced environment. On the job training of up to six months is required to learn UCS personnel, philosophy, positions and programs.

About the UCIMC:

The Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center is a grassroots organization committed to using media production and distribution as tools for promoting social and economic justice. We foster the creation and distribution of media, art, and narratives emphasizing underrepresented voices and perspectives and promote empowerment and expression through media and arts education. To this end, the UCIMC owns and operates a Community Media and Arts Center housed in the historic downtown Urbana post office building. The center is home to a dozen different projects and includes a stage, radio station, production studios, art studios, library, and meeting spaces.

About the Program Director Position:

The Program Director will work to coordinate, support, and oversee 8 AmeriCorps workers assigned to these projects: news media coordination, technical support, performance venue management, community center property management and maintenance, books to prisoners outreach, bike cooperative volunteer coordination, as well as program development for partner organizations - School for Designing a Society and Gesundheit! Institute.

The Program Director will be responsible for all administrative requirements related to the AmeriCorps program as well as making sure all members receive the structure and support they need to perform their roles effectively through daily oversight. In addition, the Program Director will be responsible for strengthening, documenting, and streamlining the volunteer process at the UCIMC. The Director will work closely with volunteer project supervisors who will help outline project tasks for the AmeriCorps members.

The Director will orient and enroll selected AmeriCorps members and in future years, be responsible for recruiting and hiring new members. The Director will plan professional development opportunities and trainings, as well as travel to meetings and conferences (in particular, AmeriCorps Opening Day, October 15, 2009 and the National Conference on Volunteer and Service June 28-30 in NYC). The Program Director will also provide a structure in which AmeriCorps members can focus on the importance of Civic Engagement, both for themselves and for their community.

Throughout the year, the Program Director will provide Performance Measure Reports and will work with the AmeriCorps to ensure these goals are met. S/he will also provide support to the UCIMC’s bookkeeper and treasurer in submitting monthly financial reports to the Serve Illinois Commission. The Program Director will develop a calendar to assist AmeriCorps and UCIMC staff with reporting and event requirements.

As the Program Director, this person will serve as the primary liaison between the UCIMC and the Serve Illinois Commission play an important role in maintaining the UCIMC’s status as a program site long-term. Therefore we are ideally looking for a multi-year commitment.

Position Summary

The Development and Communications Associate reports to the Vice President of Development and Communications. The person in this position is a member of the Development and Communications team, which is responsible for implementing a comprehensive statewide development and communications plan. Under the general supervision of the Vice President, this position is the second step on the Development and Communications career ladder and may be located in either the San Francisco or Los Angeles office of the Women’s Foundation of California. The primary focus of this position is coordinating the Foundation’s external communications, including website maintenance and electronic communications, direct mail and marketing, and producing small-scale Northern California-based events in order to generate visibility and revenue. The Development and Communications Associate will partner closely with the Vice President to implement a two-year Communications Plan (adopted in July 2009).

Essential Duties

Communications

· Primary writer of the Foundation’s external communications, including website content, e-communications, direct mail solicitations, newsletters, speeches/public presentations, marketing materials and opinion editorials and press releases.

o Website and e-communications: manage online giving strategy and marketing, including author e-appeals/e- blasts (e-advocacy) and bi-monthly e-newsletters for donors and community-based partners; maintain Foundation identity on selected social networks;

o Direct mail: conceptualize and author solicitation appeals (twice annually);

o Speeches/public presentations: serve as lead speech writer and develop public presentations for meetings and events at different scales;

o Marketing materials: Write and oversee production of brochures and other marketing pieces, liaising with graphic designers and printers;

o Media: Contribute as writer of Foundation-authored opinion editorials and press releases.

· Publications management: oversight of annual report; lead writer and editor; management of contract writers, editors, designers and printers.

Events

· Develop timelines and production schedules for small-scale (fewer than 100 guests) special events that take place in Northern California.

Qualifications

Skills:

* 3-5 years fundraising or communications experience.
* Proficiency in Kintera (website content management system) and understanding of web 2.0 tools, including social networking.
* Excellent organizational, listening, oral and written communication skills with a demonstrated ability to relate to and communicate with diverse communities.
* Strong skills in copy-editing for fundraising.
* Proficiency with MS Outlook and Office Suite (especially PowerPoint and Word), Internet communication and web navigation and search.

Founded in 1989, Urban Habitat (UH) builds power in low-income
communities and communities of color by combining policy, advocacy,
research, leadership development, and coalition building to advance
environmental, economic and social justice in the Bay Area. UH applies a

planning, and community development, and offers a clear vision and
agenda for the equitable development of the region. Urban Habitat's

Position Description

The Policy Director is a member of Urban Habitat's Management Team.
S/he plays a lead role in defining and implementing a comprehensive
policy and research agenda for the organization and its priority
campaigns, and works across programs to support strategy development and
implementation. Organizational priorities include equitable development,
transportation and housing, land use, climate justice, quality jobs,
health, tax and fiscal policy reform. The Policy Director has a strong

Essential Duties:

• Policy and Advocacy: Monitor the political landscape and
analyze local, regional, state and, national policies that are relevant
to UH's mission and campaign goals. Lead organizational efforts to
generate and pass positive policy solutions that build power in
low-income communities and communities of color and to prevent the
passage of harmful policies. Play a lead role in the creation and
advancement of UH's short and long-term policy agenda, and help
increase the capacity of UH and our partners to effectively navigate and
impact the policy-making arena. Educate and mobilize policy-maker,
community and labor allies, and other key stakeholders around UH's
policy agenda.

• Program Management and Implementation: Analyze existing
statewide climate change policies such as AB 32 and SB 375 and develop
policy solutions that benefit the region's low-income communities
and communities of color. Work with Urban Habitat's Transportation
Program to develop strategies and policies that win concrete
transportation and climate justice outcomes within the Regional
Transportation Plan and the Sustainable Communities Strategy, priority
state policies, and the federal Transportation Bill. Work with Urban
Habitat's Bay Area Social Equity Caucus to engage and mobilize
member organizations on key policy issues including climate change and
governmental tax and fiscal reform. Work with Urban Habitat's
Richmond Campaign Coordinator to support priority campaigns around
affordable housing, land-use, and green economic development. Serve as
Urban Habitat's key contact on all matters relating to climate
change and climate justice.

• Research and Writing: Strengthen UH's regional equity
analysis and framework on priority policy goals, including climate
justice, transportation and housing, equitable development, health, and
tax and fiscal policy reform. Translate complex data and policy
information into accessible written formats that can be used to educate
and engage a wide range of UH partners including community-based
organizations and elected officials. Lead UH's efforts to produce
original reports and analysis that contributes to the environmental
justice movement. Provide data, analysis and articles for UH's
web-site, RPE journal, and other UH publications.

• Staff Management and Supervision: Supervise Land Use
Coordinator and other staff, as assigned. Provide strategic direction
and oversight to ensure that staff members have the support they need to
sustain their work at a consistently high level. Maintain strong lines
of communication and coordination among all staff to ensure that
individual, programmatic and organizational goals are clearly defined
and achieved in a timely manner.

• Coalition Building: Strengthen the capacity of UH to
effectively build and engage in multi-issue and multi-sector coalitions
throughout the region, state, and nation. Serve as lead staff for
UH's participation in the Regional Policy Committee of the Great
Communities Collaborative and in ClimatePlan, along with staffing other
UH coalition efforts when needed.

• Development and Communications: Provide regular updates and
other written materials to the Director of Development and Planning,
Board of Directors, and Media and Communications Associate in order to
support UH's fundraising efforts, media strategy, and web-site
outreach. Participate in fundraising cultivation meetings and/or provide
talking points on UH's policy goals. Represent UH at conferences,
community events, workshops, and other public/media engagements.

Job Qualifications:

• Master's degree in urban planning, environmental sciences,
economics, public policy, or equivalent experience such as political
director for labor or advocacy organization.

• Knowledge and experience working on land-use planning policies
and programs (for example inclusionary zoning implementation, analysis
of planned land use alternatives, EIR and CEQA review ) and climate
change policies and programs (for example, development of climate change
actions plans)

• Hands-on experience with policy making, advocacy,
implementation, or evaluation at varying levels of government (for
example, local, regional, state, and national).

• Capacity to utilize a wide array of research methods, including
but not limited to: Internet searches, public information requests,
government reports, telephone inquiries and key informant interviews.

• Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate policy analysis

Position Summary:

The National Domestic Workers Alliance is an alliance of domestic and household workers in the United States and is a vehicle to build power nationally as a workforce. NDWA is organizing to improve the living and working conditions of domestic workers; win respect and justice from employers and government for exploited domestic workers; change the racism and sexism that has led to the persistent devaluing of this labor so that workers, their children, and the general public honor the dignity of domestic work; end the exclusion of domestic workers from recognition and protection; and continue a brave legacy of resistance by supporting movement-building among domestic workers and other communities and workers in struggle.

The Alliance formed in 2007 at the US Social Forum and held the first National Congress in June 08, where a Coordinating Committee was elected. RESPONSIBILITIES
Major Gifts:

NBC and The PIT will offer three full-ride scholarships to students with strong performance skills to study the craft of improvisation at The PIT. NBC will sponsor one student, and The PIT will sponsor two students for the entire year-long program, from Level 1 through Level 5. Each level is 8 weeks long and is offered several times per week.

A live “Finalists Showcase” will be scheduled in the fall at The PIT. The three 2009/2010 Diversity Scholars will be selected by both The PIT and NBC executives based on their performances at the end of the showcase.

Scholarship recipients should be located in or around New York City. Recipients will be responsible for their own transportation costs to and from New York City for classes, and are expected to attend each class regularly.

Staff Supervision and Support: Hire, supervise, and support staff in their ongoing work. Maintain and build a strong sense of staff teamwork and professionalism. Encourage and promote ongoing staff development and education. Provide regular performance reviews to staff members and ensure that sound human resource practices are in place.

Program Oversight: Provide "big picture" supervision for program development staff and work with them to ensure program goals are a ligned with the strategic goals of the NFCB and changing demands.
Report program evaluation outcomes to board and board committees to provide insight into new strategic directions or opportunities.

Operations & Finance: Work with the COO to ensure professional financial controls and reporting systems are in place to support ongoing usiness development and the organization’s annual audit.
Maintain official records and documents, and ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations.

Marketing and Public Relations: Represent the National Federation of Community Broadcasters and promote its mission at a national level and, most significantly, in public policy and funding circles. Qualifications:

A record of accomplishment in an entrepreneurial not-for-profit environment, preferably 7-10 years experience. A background in community radio would be a plus but is not required.

The Center for New Community is a national organization committed to building community, justice, and equality. The Center seeks a full-time Field Organizer for its new Initiative on Migration, Race, and Environment, which will expose and counter the bigotry and racism manifest in the anti-immigrant movement and its strategic use of environmental issues, climate change, and resource allocation conflicts to restrict immigration. The Initiative will strengthen the base capacity of environmental and related progressive organizations to override the anti-immigrant movement’s attempts to use environmental issues as a political wedge to defeat immigration reform efforts at the national and state levels, and to counter current or emerging anti-immigrant influence in their ranks.

The Center for New Community has been instrumental in protecting the civil and human rights of groups throughout the U.S. since its inception. In response to the growth of anti-immigrant activity, the Center been engaged with organizations across the country to stem the impact of the white nationalist, anti-immigrant movement. This Initiative furthers the Center’s long-term commitments in this regard, within the framework of its concerns about the racial structure and dynamic of forced migration as a result of environmental challenges and climate change.

Responsibilities

1. Build critical working relationships with key, national, state, and local environmental organizations and leaders to advance their positions on progressive migration policies and issues.

2. Organize and staff regional and national meetings of environmental organizations on migration, race, and environment issues, and develop leaders to speak to those issues in public venues.

3. Work with the Center’s Which Way Forward staff to advance Initiative goals with African American leaders, organizations, and media, and in the environmental justice movement.

4. Develop and implement strategies to address migration, race, and environment issues in print and electronic media.

5. Work with the Center’s Director of Operations and Communications to develop effective Web 2.0 strategies to advance the Initiative.

6. Coordinate with Center staff colleagues in developing and implementing local and national organizing strategies and responses to counter anti-immigrant activity linked to environment and resource issues.

7. Build working relationships with national and international organizations addressing forced and/or voluntary migration of peoples due to climate change.

Complete all reports on project activities to the National Field Director and to funding agencies.
Participate in Center for New Community staff meetings, and maintain regular communication with the National Field Director and with the Executive Director.
Assist in developing sustainable funding strategies for the Initiative.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California (ACLU-NC) seeks an experienced leader to serve as Associate Director to manage and coordinate the programmatic activities of the largest ACLU affiliate in the country.

The Associate Director will be responsible for directing the organization' s policy and organizing activities, working in concert with all program related departments in enhancing programmatic and political capacity and effectiveness. The Associate Director will provide guidance and oversight in the development and implementation of multi-disciplinary, high-impact campaigns for civil liberties. The Associate Director will also help build the future constituency and leadership of the organization, particularly from communities of color, young people, the LGBT community and other marginalized communities.

•Primary supervision and support of the Friedman Project, which focuses on development of youth as leaders for civil liberties and civil rights;

Political and Constituency- Building:

• Provide significant leadership to ACLU-NC led or supported ballot measure campaigns;

• Work with organizing department, board members and others to manage grass tops and grassroots advocacy;

• Work with all staff to identify channels for volunteer engagement and development of new leaders, particularly from communities of color, from LGBT community, and among young people;

• Build and sustain partnerships with other organizations and with key sectors and allies.

Fundraising and Organizational Development:

• Participate in some individual donor fundraising, as assigned;

• Coordinate with Director of Foundation Support to secure foundation grants and to evaluate and report grant outcomes and deliverables;

• Implement strategies for program work to recruit new members, identify donor prospects and involve new fundraising volunteers;

• Support program-related board committees, as assigned;

• Participate in senior staff management and planning;

• Assist staff and departments under their supervision with budgeting.

Systems and Organizational Effectiveness:

• Manage overall program planning, documentation of outcomes and evaluation of effectiveness;

• Create and utilize systems for short and long term program planning and execution;

• Provide guidance to overall contact management and database systems to ensure effective management of volunteers, supporters, activists, and organizational relationships.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will be a sophisticated, hard-working leader (minimum of seven years relevant experience) with a proven record of accomplishments related to civil rights and civil liberties advocacy. Other qualifications will include:

• Strong leadership skills in communicating, listening, guiding and supporting people toward achieving common goals;

• Substantial experience in developing successful public policy, legislative, ballot measure and/or activist campaigns;

• Management experience – both supervising staff and managing budgets and juggling multiple priorities and projects effectively;

• Ability to work effectively with experienced lawyers and other professional staff;

• Ability to motivate and interact with multi-racial, multi-generational staff, activists and leaders;

• Experience with activist training and leadership development, including amongst young people;

• Working knowledge of civil liberties issues generally (which may include those emerging from the aftermath of September 11, criminal justice issues, reproductive freedom, and equal justice on the basis of race, gender, disability, and sexual orientation) ; a "quick study" on a dynamic array of additional issues;

• Excellent communication skills, both written and oral;

• A deep and demonstrated commitment to the cause of civil liberties and civil rights;

• Comfort with analyzing and articulating legal concepts and other complex issues and communicating them to a variety of audiences;

• Personal enthusiasm and optimism, along with a sense of humor;

• Organized and able to develop and manage systems for planning and effective internal communication;

• Able to work quickly, flexibly in an often fast-paced work environment.

PSN State Campaign Support: A core part of the PSN staffer's responsibility will be to support campaigns on these issues in each state, while create national messaging and organizing that links work across the states into cohesive messaging and cross-state support. Coordinating with Partners in Stimulus Transparency and Equity: The policy advocate will work with key partners to develop standards and legislation for the states to assure that the stimulus recovery funds are used to create good-paying jobs and address racial and economic inequality in our states. Politically, the advocate will help to work across the states to frame state priorities as serving national economic recovery goals.
Highlight Developments on Privatization: Part of the work will be supporting a national collaboration around privatization and contract accountability funded by the Ford Foundation with the goal of helping the partners in the collaboration develop innovative new strategies to promote responsible contracting in the coming years. This will include highlighting research on privatization in state and local government contracts and tracking major new privatization deals proposed in states and best practices being promoted in different states in response that promote accountability.

The Progressive States Network is a state-based organization, the mission of which is to pass progressive legislation in all 50 of America's state legislatures, strengthen progressive alliances, and challenge rightwing forces in each of those states.

Job Description: Progressive States Network has built a network of over 750 state legislators in forty-eight states who support fundamental progressive health care reform and the task of the health care policy advocate, working with both national and state organizational allies, is to help translate that legislative network into concrete changes in both federal and state policy. Mobilize legislators and allies in support of federal health care reform;

Chicken & Egg Pictures is a hybrid film fund and non-profit production company dedicated to supporting women filmmakers who are as passionate about the craft of storytelling as they are about the social justice, environmental and human rights issues they're embracing, translating and exploring on film.
We match strategically timed financial support with rigorous, respectful and dynamic mentorship, creative collaboration and community-building to nurture women filmmakers whose diverse voices represent a range of lived experience and realities that have the power to change the world as we know it.

Filmmakers are supported at pivotal "chicken & egg" moments, and can apply for support - development to completion. Since founding in 2005, Chicken & Egg Pictures has provided approximately $1 million dollars in funding to over 50 women-made films.

2009 Television Writers Program

Writers Program

This program is not for beginners. It is for those writers who can write at least one half-hour comedy or one-hour dramatic television script in English within a five-week period of time.

The program will take place in Los Angeles, CA from November 7th to December 12th. Each participant is expected to complete at least one script by the end of the five-week session, which will then be read by network executives.

Those writers whose scripts show promise will be interviewed and mentored by the network executives with the idea of placing them on a show. Nine of our writers from previous sessions have already been placed.

A stipend of $250 per week will be given to each participant.

Flight, housing, and meals will be provided.

The program will commence on November 7th.

If selected, you must be available to fly and stay in Los Angeles, CA
from November 7 —December 12, 2009

Writing samples must be in English and Television scripts are preferred.

Please note that writing teams are ineligible. The deadline for submissions is August 28th.

Scripts will be evaluated and program participants announced on October 12th.

SBA Launches New 100-Percent Guarantee ARC Loan Program to Help Struggling Businesses

WASHINGTON – Small businesses suffering financial hardship as a result of the slow economy may be eligible to receive temporary relief to keep their doors open and get their cash flow back on track through to a new loan program announced today by SBA Administrator Karen G. Mills.

Beginning on June 15, SBA will start guaranteeing America’s Recovery Capital (ARC) loans. ARC loans are deferred-payment loans of up to $35,000 available to established, viable, for-profit small businesses that need short-term help to make their principal and interest payments on existing qualifying debt. ARC loans are interest-free to the borrower, 100 percent guaranteed by the SBA, and have no SBA fees associated with them.

“These ARC loans can provide the critical capital and support many small businesses need to make it through these tough economic times,” said Administrator Mills. “Together with other provisions of the Recovery Act, ARC loans will free up capital and put more money in the hands of small business owners when they need it the most. This will help viable small businesses continue to grow and thrive and create new jobs in communities across the country.”

“It’s my firm belief that we will soon see better days ahead with these Recovery Act tools including this highly anticipated deferred-payment loan that can now aid small business owners confronting these dynamic conditions,” said Alberto G. Alvarado, Los Angeles SBA District Director.

As part of the Recovery Act, the ARC program was created as a no-interest, deferred payment loan to help small businesses that have a history of good performance, but as a result of the tough economy, are struggling to make debt payments.

ARC loans will be disbursed within a period of up to six months and will provide funds to be used for payments of principal and interest for existing, qualifying small business debt including mortgages, term and revolving lines of credit, capital leases, credit card obligations and notes payable to vendors, suppliers and utilities. Repayment will not begin until 12 months after the final disbursement. Borrowers don’t have to pay interest on ARC loans. After the 12-month deferral period, borrowers will pay back the loan principal over a period of five years.

Supervision:

The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA) is a non-profit organization founded in 1986 to advance the human and civil rights of immigrants and refugees in Los Angeles. As a multi-ethnic coalition of community organizations and individuals, CHIRLA aims to foster greater understanding of issues that affect immigrant communities, provide a neutral forum for discussion, and unite immigrant groups to more effectively advocate for positive change. CHIRLA’s programs include coalition-building and convening of organizations, advocacy around issues affecting immigrants and refugees, community education, service provision and technical assistance, and organizing and leadership development for immigrant workers and youth.

POSITION SUMMARY: The Academic Coordinator is a new position at CHIRLA with the purpose of providing academic support to our Youth Organizing Project High School (Wise Up!) leaders as part of the Civic Opportunities Initiative Network (COIN), a national program to engage youth in active citizenship and service creating new leaders grounded in community based organizations. The Academic Coordinator is expected to develop and implement an academic achievement program which compliments CHIRLA’s leadership development program and will work closely with CHIRLA’s Youth Organizers. The goal of the academic program will be to ensure that we prepare CHIRLA student leaders to apply for and attend a four-year college or university by providing academic assessments, tutoring, and one-on-one support for students. Special attention will be paid to the 8-10 students that are part the national COIN cohort

JOB RESPONSIBILITES:

1. Perform tracking and assessment of Wise Up! student leaders’ academic progress

· Maintain student academic files of CHIRLA youth members and assess each students A-G and graduation progress

· Flag students that are struggling and Identify internal and external opportunities to assist students

· Identify internal and external opportunities to assist students

2. Coordinate Homework Hours as part of the Wise Up! Core Leaders Curriculum

· Plan and conduct workshops/ activities

· Coordinate and schedule volunteer tutors:

3. Prepare assignments/ projects for students without homework
One-on-One assessments with students and their families to provide increased support and attention

· Create avenues for involvement of parents, families, and/or guardians in academic support network, including meetings with them directly

· Create Academic Empowerment Plans for struggling students, including indentifying steps to improve academic standing

4. Plan and execute process to ensure 90% of CHIRLA youth successfully attend a 4 yr college / University

· Organize and conduct college application workshop series with Wise Up seniors to insure successful completion of college applications, financial aid, and scholarships

· Schedule 8-week SAT prep course for Juniors

· Identify and recruit outside support for college app workshops including

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:

· Minimum two years academic advisor experience (high school or college)

· Community or worker organizing experience a plus

· Experience in program development and execution

· Superior professional manner & networking abilities

· Bilingual English/Spanish a must

· Computer literacy: word processing, internet navigation, and other work-related applications

· Knowledge of and commitment to immigrant and worker rights and CHIRLA mission

· Excellent interpersonal skills especially with youth populations
